How Old Am I?
Yes I’m 38 Years Young, or as I like to say it’s my 17th anniversary to my 21st Birthday… oh nevermind that sounds horrible lol.
Let’s see I was born in 1984, arguably the best year in the 80’s.
- In January Apple ran their ad and started selling the Apple Macintosh computer for $2,500. Their commercial first aired during the Superbowl where the Los Angeles Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins (38-9). Michael Jackson’s infamous incident where he was burned during a Pepsi commercial happened days later.
- In February the first untethered spacewalk was performed, they controlled their movements using a specially designed jetpack. A Serial Killer (known as the Beauty Queen Killer) attacks his first victim before claiming at least seven more.
- In March “This is Spinal Tap” releases in US. And Lionel Richie’s “Hello” tops the UK charts.
- In April Marvin Gaye passes away, shot by his own father while trying to intervene in a altercation between his parents. Comedian Tommy Cooper dies live on TV while having a Heart Attack people thought was part of the act.
- In May and out of court settlement for $180 Million is awarded to American Vietnam war veterans suffering illnesses and disabilities caused by Agent Orange. Six inmates on death row all escape from Mecklenburg Correctional Center being the first to do so, they were apprehended days later.
- In June “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen is released in America as well as “Purple Rain” by Prince. Tetris is born (originally only being available for the Electronika 60 Console. A F5 tornado hits Wisconsin which was unable to be predicted that kills 9 people, injures 200 more, and estimates damages up to $25 Million, one of the most catastrophic weather events in 1984. Ghostbusters debuts in Theatres.
- In July “When Doves Cry” hits the billboards number one slot and stays there for 5 weeks, becoming the most successful song of the year. A 19 year old (Terry Wallis) loses control of his truck outside the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas, his friend dies in the incident and Terry doesn’t wake up from his Coma until 19 years later. The National Drinking Age Act is passed in America, changing the legal limit determined by state at the time to 21 nationwide. The first female Captain (Beverly Burns) of a Boeing 747 makes her maiden voyage. The first female cosmonaut (Svetlana Savitskaya) to perform a spacewalk during Soviet space mission Salyut 7. The first women’s cycling event to be included in the Olympic program is held. Connie Carpenter from Team USA won the Gold Medal in Individual Road Race.
- In August, president Ronald Reagan jokes about bombing Russia during a mic check for a radio interview and the remark is leaked to the press and becomes an infamous report around the world. The founder of DeLorean Motor Company was acquitted of drug trafficking charges.
- In September, British Geneticist, Alec Jeffreys develops genetic fingerprinting, allowing him to identify people using their DNA. The method, when commercialized will allow forensic scientists to assist with solving crimes. Princess Diana gives birth to her second child with Prince Charles. The new prince’s name is announced the next day as Henry Charles Albert David. The American family sitcom Happy Days is cancelled after 11 seasons.
- In October Children’s TV show Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends is first broadcast in the UK. The series is based on original stories by Rev. W Awdry and is narrated by former Beatle, Ringo Starr. Stevie Wonder reaches the billboard number 1 in the US with his song I Just Called to Say I Love You. The song stays there for three weeks. BBC News presenter Michael Buerk reports on famine in Ethiopia which has already claimed thousands of lives. As a result, numerous charities across the world begin raising funds to support the millions of Ethiopians affected by the famine. Singer Bob Geldof views the heart-breaking report and subsequently forms the Band Aid supergroup. James Cameron’s film, The Terminator, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger is released in the US.
- In November, In the Presidential election, Ronald Reagan defeats Democratic candidate Walter F. Mondale with a landslide victory. The Democrats only gain majority in one state, giving the Republicans 49. Horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street is released in the United States. 36 pop musicians from across Britain and Ireland gather in a Notting Hill, London studio to record Do They Know It’s Christmas to raise money for Ethiopian famine victims. Aaron Saia was born!
- In December, Beverly Hills Cop starring Eddie Murphy premieres in Los Angeles. Do They Know It’s Christmas?” goes to the top of the UK Singles Chart. The Band Aid charity single was released December 3rd. Madonna’s single Like a Virgin single goes to the billboard number 1 in America for 6 weeks.
I mean come on, that sounds like a bad-ass year for music and movies, and some events that helped cultivate the society we live in today… the good things not the bad ones lol.
